Elden Ring, the latest from developer FromSoftware is nearly upon us, and we’re looking forward to seeing how the Dark Souls formula works within a true open world. And while Elden Ring will offer a vast world to explore, it’s still a Souls game so you’d better get used to the hard-as-nails combat, scarce resources and unforgiving save systems. And the best way to ‘git gud’ is to play either the Souls games themselves, or these five Souls-like games that will get you ready for Elden Ring.
Mortal Shell
Mortal Shell is heavy on atmosphere and mystery, just like most Souls games. You play as a pale human-like creature who can possess mortal shells aka bodies of slain soldiers on its journey to take down the monstrosities that caused the fall of humanity. Combat in Mortal Shell is slow, methodical and brutally unforgiving, but like Souls games, you can parry and dodge at the cost of stamina.
Remnant: From the Ashes
A third-person cooperative shooter, Remnant’s similarity to the Souls games comes from its difficulty and limited resources. You play as a human survivor who must put an end to the Root – the very same evil force that caused the apocalypse. Remnant doesn’t feel like a typical Souls game since you can shoot weapons here, but don’t let that fool you; it’s just as unforgiving, cryptic and entertaining as the Souls games.
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
Sekiro may actually be tougher than most Souls games, probably since it was developed by FromSoftware itself. The game takes place in 17th Century Japan, and you play as a shinobi – a warrior who must avenge the death of his master against a rival clan. While brutally tough in its own way, Sekiro is more reminiscent of old school titles like Ninja Gaiden with its fast-paced gameplay that rewards aggression.
The Surge 2
Developer Deck13 has a lot of experience with the Souls formula, given that they’ve only developed Souls-like games. All that hard work definitely paid off with The Surge 2, the studio’s latest that is as engaging as it is tough. In The Surge 2, you wake up in a harsh cyberpunk-themed world where hostile AI has taken over. You must escape, survive and put the pieces together using your combat skills.
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
Don’t let the Star Wars skin fool you; Fallen Order is a challenging action-adventure game that’s heavily inspired by Souls games. You play as Cal Kestis, a Jedi on the run from Darth Vader’s apprentices, who must join hands with other allies to rebuild the Fallen Order. The game mixes up its tense action with a lot of puzzle solving and platforming to deliver a well-rounded package.
