Rainbow Six Extraction is a solid entry in the Rainbow Six franchise, but it can be daunting for beginners, especially those who’ve never played Siege or similar tactical shooters. Don’t worry; with our beginners guide, you’ll be proficient at battling Extraction’s alien menace in no time.
Don’t shoot everything that moves
We know this tip seems counter-intuitive given that this is a first-person shooter, but Extraction is not the kind of game that rewards players with the highest kills. Completing your objectives and fulfilling Studies are the XP pinatas here. In fact, shooting targets draws unnecessary attention and could potentially ruin a stealthy run.
Crouching good, running bad
Extraction – much like Siege – is a slow-paced tactical shooter that rewards and encourages stealth, which is why you should always stay crouched until you’ve completely scoped out an area. One player should always be on drone duty scanning for objectives and potential hazards. You can take out almost every enemy type with a backstab, so staying quiet almost always works in your favour.
Cut out reinforcements
Nests act as spawn points for enemies in Extraction and almost every objective will have some nests peppered nearby. Before you proceed to your objective, you should survey and destroy all nearby nests. This will cut out spawn points for enemies and will limit the number of reinforcements, making life a whole lot easier for you and your squad.
Start solo
Extraction has a lot of gameplay mechanics that aren’t explained too well in the tutorial. We suggest playing through a few rounds solo at a lower difficulty to fully understand these mechanics. This way you can experiment with different operators and learn the ropes through trial and error without impatient teammates breathing down your neck.
Choose wisely
Choose operators according to your playstyle. Their description is right there in the menu, so go through it to make sure that the current operator is the one for you. If you’re playing in a team, try and go in with a diverse roster. It won’t make sense for everyone to choose a run-and-gun class.
Pain is for the weak
Almost every enemy in Extraction has a weak point, allowing you to take them out with one swift headshot. Just be careful with the Breachers/Bloaters though; you’ll be tempted to shoot the sack on their backs that’ll make them go boom, but that boom will attract a lot of unwanted attention. Keep destroying goo. Shooting it is faster but if you don’t have an operator with a big ammo clip, keep meleeing it to clear it without wasting ammunition.
Don’t be afraid to extract
You’ll be tempted to play through all three phases of a mission for maximum XP pay out, but some objectives – like defending explosives – are just not worth the headache. In these cases, it makes more sense to extract because dying will waste one part of the next run in the form of a rescue mission.
Study hard
Keep an eye on the Studies tab in Extraction. While you’ll constantly gain XP for just playing the game, completing Studies (aka challenges) like ‘Killing an X amount of aliens’ or ‘Covering an X amount of aliens with smoke’ will net you as much XP as a successful run. Plus, each area has its own set of studies that not only shower you with XP, but also unlock cool skins/camos for your operator.
