Halo Infinite has been shadow-dropped, and while it’s been launched in a polished state, the game takes getting used to, especially if this is your first Halo game. Players coming in from other shooters like Valorant or even Call of Duty will have to get used to different aspects of Infinite, like movement and TTK, and our tips should make this transition a lot easier.
Practise makes perfect
If this is your first Halo game, or you haven’t played one of the many Infinite previews, get accustomed to the map and weapon/equipment ASAP since this is the key to victory in Halo. And the best way to do this is loading up a server with bots to learn the ropes. You can practise with bots online in public lobbies or create a private lobby with friends – with you guys on one side, and the bots on the other. Bot behaviour can also be modified to be tougher, easier or ridiculously challenging.
Experiment with equipment
Infinite offers a diverse range of equipment that can aid your movement and life span in multiplayer. But some of these have multiple uses that can help you in different situations. Take the grapple hook for example: it can be used to aid movement and move around the map faster, but you can also use it to latch onto vehicles and hijack them or pull weapons toward you. Besides experimenting with equipment to unlock their full potential, try and figure out counters for certain pieces of equipment as well. The deployable shield, for example, can help you deflect damage, but shooting the bottom part of the shield can take it down in seconds. This information is useful when you’re trying to take out a camper sitting all smug behind his shied.
Stay mobile
With games like Halo, mobility can mean the difference between life and death, and in Infinite, this comes from new movement mechanics like sliding and the grapple hook. This is not Valorant, where your accuracy increases if you crouch to control bullet spread. In an Arena shooter, it’s all about running and gunning, so get used to hip firing while moving since Halo doesn’t really believe in the concept of ADS (aiming down sights).
Be mindful about your surroundings
Every time you load into a level, scan the entire level. This will highlight everything from weapon to equipment pick-ups, and that kind of knowledge can turn the tide of battle in your favour. This goes without saying, but always keep an eye on the radar. Enemies will be denoted by small red dots, while vehicles will be bigger red dots. This works in your favour if you’re trying a flank in a big team battle and are unsure of what lies ahead. Be warned though; crouched enemies will not show up on the radar unless they fire their weapon. Infinite’s weapon racks also denote the timer a weapon will take to respawn, so if a rocket launcher is spawning in 10 seconds, camp that point.
Play smart
Yes, this is an arena shooter that encourages running and gunning but there is a certain amount of tact required. Let’s say you’re playing a round of Big Team Battle. In this mode, maps are huge, so it’s important to understand range. If an enemy is far away, switch to your pistol or Battle Rifle, or look for a sniper to try and take them out. Use weapons like ARs and shotguns for close-ranged encounters. In Infinite, the TTK (time to kill) is fairly high since you have to chew through an enemy’s shield and health bar. In this case, you’d want to use plasma weapons to shred shields and then switch to your pistol/BR/AR to finish the job. It’s a far more efficient way of killing than emptying clips into an enemy. You can also spot enemies if you aren’t on comms. Simply mark them by pressing “X” and it’ll then relay their position via a text message to your team.
Objective carriers have been nerfed, so support them since they run slowly and can’t wield a weapon while running with a skull or flag. If you find yourself playing the objective (which you should), you don’t need to be completely helpless; throw the objective temporarily, switch to your weapon, eliminate a foe and then resume running around with the objective. You can also use the grapple hook to pull that thrown flag toward you. Use every tool in your arsenal to get the job done.
