PC gamers have been missing out on some stellar PlayStation-exclusive games over the decades. In the past, PC gamers had no other choice but to pick up a Sony console to play these games, but Sony has now realised the importance of the PC market. Sony has shown real commitment to the PC gaming space by creating a specific division to handle the transition of many of its first-party franchises. The gates opened in 2020 with Horizon: Zero Dawn, and Days Gone in 2021 and joining its PS brethren today is God of War, one of the best PS4 games ever made.
For those who missed out on the God of War franchise, God of War is essentially a hyper-violent, epic action-adventure in which you play as a super angry demigod who tore through Greek mythology over the course of the original trilogy (that spanned the PS2 and PS3 eras). The game in question here is 2018’s God of War, with which Sony rebooted the franchise, giving it a more mature tone. Kratos, the game’s protagonist, is now a father, and since fatherhood doesn’t come easily to him, his struggling relationship with his son Atreus becomes the focal point of the game. While God of War is often thoughtful and poignant in its narrative, it’s still a God of War game at heart, so there’s a lot of action, platforming and adventure to be had.
While God of War is still an action game, it offers up some RPG elements in the form of character and gear customisation. Kratos can unlock and access both active and passive abilities, while Runes affect the way your weapons perform. Bosses and tougher enemies drop better gear and God of War has some of the toughest fights this franchise has to offer. In fact, there’s an end-game mode you should only attempt once you have a solid build.
With God of War, the camera has been zoomed in to resemble a third-person game, and this keeps the action up close and personal. Kratos has access to light and heavy attacks and can chain them together to pull off some devastating combos. What is particularly impressive is how combat, which was designed for a game controller, translates to mouse and keyboard. Controlling Kratos and slashing your way through hordes of enemies feels natural and intuitive. Of course, if you’d still prefer the controller, you can just plug and play, and that works really well too.
On the performance front, Sony’s PC offerings weren’t off to a great start with the PC port of Horizon: Zero Dawn, but as newer ports like Days Gone have shown, Sony has really upped its port game. God of War is an extremely well optimised game with a bevy of customisation options so you can squeeze the most out of your hardware. The game even ships with Nvidia DLSS as well as AMD FidelityFX to boost performance even if you don’t have serious hardware under the hood.
Sony’s first party franchises are all about quality and high production values and God of War is no different in this regard. Voice acting, story, presentation, art design, visuals and gameplay all complement each other to create a phenomenal single-player experience that will leave you asking for more.
