Halo Infinite is the latest in the fabled Halo franchise, and even if you’re a returning veteran, the game introduces a lot of new gameplay mechanics, and an open world to play around in. And while you can progress any way you’d like, here are a few tips to get you started.
Tactical exploration
Halo introduces an open-world-esque structure with Infinite, and while you can explore it any way you’d like, here’s what we suggest. First, liberate as many Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) as you can. Doing so allows you to change your weapons and restock on ammo in the FOB locker. More importantly, this also unlocks all the collectibles and side quests for that particular area. FOBs also double up as fast travel points so moving around the game world becomes a lot easier.
Collectibles in Infinite come in two kinds – cosmetic items for multiplayer, and Spartan Cores. These cores can be used to upgrade all your equipment, like the grappling hook, threat sensor, etc so it’s best you nab as many as you can to make chief as strong and agile as possible for some of the tougher encounters in the game.
Start slow
Infinite is not a very easy game, and since you can’t change difficulty mid-game, we definitely recommend Normal for your first play through. Infinite even throws a lot of bosses at you, which can get immensely frustrating at the higher difficulties. That being said, if you’re the masochistic kind and do decide to start off at a higher level, kindly refer to our previous point to make Chief an agile tank.
Shields down
Through the Infinite campaign and HVT (high-value target) hunts, you’ll come across a lot of bosses. and many of them seem like bullet sponges at first. But if you take the time to explore and experiment, each one of them has a weakness you definitely should exploit. Some are more vulnerable to shock damage, so make sure you have a shock weapon or keep throwing shock coils at them. The cloaked ones can be spotted using your threat sensor, making quick work of an invisible foe. But one thing all of them are vulnerable to is plasma damage, and plasma weapons can take their shields down in seconds. Once those are down, go ham on their health bar and finish them off.
Experiment with equipment
Infinite offers a diverse range of equipment that can aid your movement and life expectancy. But some of these have multiple uses that can help you in different situations. Take the grapple hook for example; it can be used to aid movement and move around the map faster, but you can also use it to latch onto vehicles and hijack them or pull weapons toward you. The threat sensor is also a great tool to spot invisible elites, while the drop wall can protect you from an incoming hailstorm of bullets. Choose one that appeals to your playstyle and upgrade that piece of equipment first.
Be prepared
As we mentioned earlier, Infinite is not a very easy game, and running into a crowd of enemies head-on will almost always get you killed. Almost all bases have different kinds of enemies, from long-range snipers to charging brutes to shielded enemies. Have a plan to deal with each one of them. We always recommend a ranged weapon like a battle rifle or a sniper to take out the ranged foes first since snipers in this game can one- or two-shot you, depending on the difficulty you’re playing at. While going after HVTs, make sure you have a plasma weapon so you can melt their shields before you begin attacking them. And always have the grapple hook equipped since that can be used to zip out of a tough spot.
