Valorant introduces level 20 requirement for competitive play

New players – and smurfs – now have quite a grind ahead of them

Valorant’s latest episode brings in a new agent and a new battle pass, but also a significant new change that will affect the game’s competitive mode.

All new Valorant players will now have to achieve level 20 by playing the game’s unranked modes, like Unrated and Spike Rush, before they will be allowed into the competitive queue. This means, depending on skill level, players have a few hours of grinding ahead of them before they can play competitive matches.

Previously, players were only required to win 10 unraked matches to be eligible to play competitive.

The changes will ensure that new players have enough time to get accustomed to the game mechanics and maps and to gain sufficient experience with the game before being thrown in with more skilled players.

“We believe everyone should take time to learn the ins and outs of core gameplay, and have ample exposure to all the maps and agents Valorant will throw at you before competing in our ranked experience,” Riot said in a statement.

The move is also a way to curb smurfing, a tactic whereby highly skilled players create alternate low-level accounts in order to be matched up with newer and lower-skill players.
