While many of 2021’s anticipated action games were delayed thanks to Covid, 2022 is shaping up to be quite a stellar year for gaming. Today, we’ll look at the most anticipated action games of the year that include a lot of recurring franchises but also some highly anticipated new ones.
Dying light 2: Stay Human
Dying Light differentiated itself from the myriad of zombie games by not being a conventional shooter. It prioritised movement by keeping the protagonist proficient in parkour, while conventional weaponry was replaced by makeshift melee weapons that kept the action brutal and intense. Dying light 2 takes place 20 years after the events of the first game and improves upon all the gameplay elements introduced by its predecessor nearly six years ago. After several delays, we look forward to finally playing Techland’s latest early this year.
Sifu
Sifu is a third-person brawler with a unique premise, where players don’t stay dead upon defeat; instead they come back to life thanks to a magic talisman. On the downside, every time you resurrect, you’ll age. Once you use up all the talisman’s power, you’ll stay dead. Combat in Sifu is a more fleshed out version of what you saw in Sleeping Dogs with a myriad of martial arts moves at your disposal. But don’t expect to breeze through this game, as it demands mastery of combat and overcoming a variety of foes that stand in your way.
Weird West
From some of the developers behind the Dishonored series comes yet another open-ended action experience where players will be transported to the Wild West as they fight supernatural forces threatening the land. Weird West will take place from an isometric perspective (think Diablo III) and will offer players five character architypes to choose from. Each playthrough will play out differently thanks to randomized elements throughout each level.
Saints Row
This year’s Saints Row is a reboot of the over-the-top third-person open-world franchise. All the older characters have been axed in favour of a newer lot, who must work together to take over the fictional city of Santo Ileso. Like older entries, this one will feature both on-foot and in-car mayhem – along with a massive arsenal of weapons. And just like the last two mainline games, Saints Row will ship with two player co-op.
Gotham Knights
Batman is “dead” and Gotham City as you know it has been plunged into chaos in his absence. This is the premise of Gotham Knights, a brand-new third-person action game developed by the studio behind the underrated Batman: Arkham Origins. Choose from one of four playable characters – Nightwing, Batgirl, Robin, and Red Hood – and then team up with a friend to bring the streets to justice.
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League
After what seems like an eternity, developer Rocksteady Games is back, and this time, they’re giving the Suicide Squad the video game treatment. The game will allow players to play as one of four members of the Squad – Captain Boomerang, Deadshot, Harley Quinn, and King Shark – as they attempt to take down the Justice League, who’ve been brainwashed by Braniac. The game is primarily a single-player affair, but will feature co-op elements as well.
