Ubisoft has greenlit a remake of the original Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell game, with development being led by Ubisoft Toronto. The game will be built on Ubisoft’s own Snowdrop engine, which is also being used to create other upcoming games like Avatar: Frontiers of Pandroa and Ubisoft’s upcoming Star Wars game.
While the more recent Splinter Cell games took a more action shooter approach, the first game, released in 2002, was a pure stealth affair with a focus on blending into the shadows. In addition to refining the gameplay, Ubisoft says the remake will also feature new-generation visuals and dynamic lighting.
Producer Matt West says that the idea behind the remaster is to retain the essence of the original game, while rebuilding it from the ground up to “match player comfort and expectations”. It will also remain linear as opposed to being an open-world game.
“There’s stuff that simply needs to be redone from scratch to be up to snuff for a modern gameplay experience. With that, though, what do we need to do to absolutely preserve the feeling of early Splinter Cell? We’re going to be straddling the line between the spirit of the old, and the comfort of the new, so that we can excite and surprise new players, but also make sure that when our returning players pick up the controller, they have that sigh of relief, saying ‘Ahhh, they got it’,” said West.
While there is no release date yet for the Splinter Cell remake, creative director Chris Auty did add that this release will not be a one-off appearance from Sam Fisher.
“With this remake, we are building a solid base for the future of Splinter Cell,” Auty said.
