Grid Legends, the latest in Codemasters’ arcade-sim racing franchise, will launch on February 25, 2022. Announced at E3 earlier in the year, the developer has now delved deeper into what the game will offer, including a story-driven campaign, more action-packed races, new multiplayer features, as well as a creation suite to let players create their own custom races.
Driven to Glory, the game’s career mode, will feature a character-driven story as players race for glory in a grand touring series. This story will then lead players into a more structured career, with a series of events to compete in.
Where past games, like Grid Autosport, brought in a substantial amount of track racing, Codemasters’ prime focus this time around appears to be in street racing, with an emphasis on action and drama, as well as new urban locations. The game will also feature AI rivalries and unique personas as well as race events like crashes and AI vehicular failures like tyre bursts and engine blowouts to add an element of unpredictability.
Grid Legends also promises to offer a seamless multiplayer experience, with cross-platform support across PC and consoles. The game aims to make it easier to party up, with alerts when friends log on and the ability to join them in multiplayer races quickly.
The game sees the return of familiar events like Elimination, and features over 100 cars, including trucks, sports cars, open-wheel track cars, buggies, and – new to the series – electric cars. The latter even benefits from a new event type – electric boost – that throws in boost picks-ups across the track that add a tactical layer to the racing frenzy.
Codemasters also detailed the game’s creation tools, which will allow players to pick from multiple combinations of options to create events with numerous vehicle types, event rules and track variations to play and share with the Grid community.
After a bit of a diversion to track racing with Grid Autosport, Codemasters rebooted the franchise with 2019’s Grid to a mixed response from fans and critics alike. The developer will be looking to bring back the franchise to the heights it achieved with it’s 2008 debut when Grid Legends launches in February 2022.
