Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodhunt
If battle royale games are your jam, why not try one where you can scale buildings and leap across rooftops as a child of the night! Take down other vampires using an arsenal of weapons in this three-man BR game that takes place in the cult-favourite Vampire: The Masquerade universe.
Deathly Stillness
Deathly Stillness is more of a demo than a full-fledged game in which you have to survive a zombie apocalypse. It’s typical survival horror stuff, but what’s especially impressive is that the game has the polish of a AAA title even though it’s been developed by one man.
Split Gate
Halo meets Portal in this fast-paced arena shooter that ships with a metric ton of game modes. The game takes some getting used to – especially with the way you need to move around maps using portals – but once you do, pulling off upside-down headshots through portals is totally worth it.
Apex Legends
A super-sweaty online shooter from the makers of Titanfall, Apex Legends mixes battle royale conventions with hero shooter-esque abilities and an insane traversal system. Fair warning: the game has a pretty steep skill barrier, but if you can persevere enough cross that, chances are you won’t play any other BR game.
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
What started life as a mod to Half-Life has become one of the most popular competitive shooters till date. Even with heavy hitters like Valorant and Warzone around, CS:GO still enjoys an extremely healthy community with a myriad of game modes for both casuals and try-hards.
Path of Exile
Not a big fan of competitive shooters? Path of Exile is an old-school Diablo-esque ARPG that offers solo, co-operative and competitive play. The game has nearly a decade worth of content to play through, and an even more ambitious sequel is planned for release sometime next year.
Call of Duty: Warzone
Call of Duty may have introduced battle royale with Black Ops 4, but no one – Activision included –could have predicted how this game would blow up. Sure, most lobbies are full of hackers now, but with a new anti-cheat on the horizon, this game could get a second wind when Call of Duty: Vanguard launches this November.
Rogue Company
Counter-Strike meets Overwatch in this third-person tactical PvP shooter. Unlike CS however, Rogue Company offers more game modes, like capture the hill, capture the flag and more, and each agent is equipped with powerful abilities that can turn the tides of war in the heat of battle.
Valorant
Valorant is one of the most popular competitive shooters on the planet right now, and lucky for you, it’s free of cost. Unfortunately, you’re going to have to get good at the game very fast or prepare to be mocked by dedicated players who take this game way too seriously.
Fortnite
Like Valorant, Fortnite is one of those games you just know about even if you aren’t a hardcore gamer. A cultural juggernaut at this stage, Fortnite is a third-person battle royale game, but has evolved into a live service with concerts, cross-overs and tons of in-game events that no game does better.
Paladins
When Blizzard’s Overwatch came out, there were a ton of ‘hero shooters’ flooding the market, but Paladins managed to carve a niche for itself with a not-so-toxic community and a dedicated developer that continues to support the game with meaningful updates.
Dauntless
Dauntless is a co-operative third-person action-RPG where you have to hunt giant monsters – much like Capcom’s Monster Hunter series. You can harvest a monster’s parts to craft better gear, with which you can then hunt even bigger monsters. Everyone wins…except the monsters, of course.
Warframe
Warframe is a third-person, melee-based game in which you literally play as a space ninja who explores different planets, killing (almost) everything that moves in their path. The game has an insane amount of content, but be prepared to do a lot of reading – you’ll need a PhD to understand the game’s many mechanics.
